Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi clarified that non-Muslim business operators will not be forced to obtain halal certification. He emphasized that the government has not decided to mandate halal certification for all food and beverage (F&B) businesses nationwide. The issue arose after a statement by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, suggesting mandatory certification for restaurants not serving pork or alcohol. This proposal sparked controversy, with Seputeh MP Teresa Kok arguing that halal certification should remain voluntary, driven by market demand. The cabinet has yet to make any formal decision on the matter.
