Four young Israeli nationals were detained at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on March 25 while attempting to transit to the Philippines. According to Israeli media, two women flew from Thailand to Malaysia believing it was safe to transit after consulting an online chatbot.
Malaysian Authorities Deport Israeli Nationals
They were detained and later returned to Thailand. Two men travelling from Cambodia to the Philippines via Kuala Lumpur were also held for two days before being deported back to Cambodia.
Reports suggest at least eight Israelis have been detained at KLIA in recent months, some holding dual nationalities. Malaysia does not recognise Israel and has no diplomatic ties with the state.
Following the incidents, Israeli Ambassador to Singapore Eliyahu Vered Hazan warned citizens against travelling to Malaysia, stressing that they should avoid both visits and transit. He reiterated Israel’s National Security Council advisory, urging travellers to steer clear of Malaysia entirely.
