Malaysia is ramping up efforts to become Asia’s top destination for major international concerts through its Concert and Event in Malaysia Incentives (CEMI) programme. The initiative offers financial rebates for large-scale events with over 15,000 attendees, receiving over 100 applications before its July 10 deadline. While fans remain disappointed that many global stars skip Malaysia, industry players welcome CEMI as a strategic step to boost tourism and economic spillovers in hotels, F&B, and transport. However, experts warn that regulatory reforms and broader support are needed to compete with neighbours like Singapore, which saw Taylor Swift’s concerts boost GDP by RM1.32 billion.
