I Paid $900 to Upgrade to Delta One for a 10-Hour Flight to Rome

I Paid $900 to Upgrade to Delta One for a 10-Hour Flight to Rome Passenger Splurges $1,500 on Delta One Upgrade

A first trip to Italy was the excuse for a long-held treat: international business class. The writer booked a Los Angeles–Rome round trip for 100,000 miles plus $75 in fees. She set herself a rule to upgrade to Delta One only if it cost under $1,000. After checking Delta’s website almost daily for months, she snagged the 10-hour Minneapolis–Rome leg for $900.

The $900 Business-Class Upgrade That Let Me Sleep Seven Hours Over the Atlantic

The perks began on the ground. She got dedicated check-in, a two-minute private security line and the Delta One lounge in Los Angeles. Minneapolis had only a Sky Club, which was crowded and loud.

On board, a newer Airbus A330-900neo gave her a lie-flat pod with a sliding door, a Missoni amenity kit and Champagne before takeoff. A famously bad sleeper, she slept seven hours and landed ready to explore Rome.

Food was the letdown. Her salmon was dry and overcooked, and turbulence disrupted the coursed service. The shrimp, tomato bisque, ice cream cart and Belgian waffle breakfast did impress her.

Her verdict was that the upgrade was worth $900 but not the roughly $4,000 one-way fare. Her limit is about $1,500.
