Indian Community Now Stand at 6.6% of Malaysia’s Population

1 min read

The Indian Community now represents only 6.6% of the Malaysian population according to the latest stats resulting from a census done by the Malaysian Department of Statistics. Before 2020, the number was 7.3% (2010) but it dropped to 6.7% in 2020. Focus Malaysia today says one of the possible root cause could be the marriage dilemma.

This factor leads to the reluctance of many young ethnic Indians to get married and start a family at an early age. “This non-committal perspective is more significant among the career-minded, middle-income ethnic Indians, who choose to focus on their career rather than on their marriage in order to be financially stable,” says Penang Hindu Association (PHA) president P. Murugiah.
