Indonesia says sex law do not apply to tourists

1 min read

In an attempt to calm the spirits and get tourists to continue visiting Indonesia, the country’s Law and Human Rights Deputy Minister Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej on Monday urged tourists not to be worried about its new sex law banning sex outside marriage.

Premarital sex and cohabitation are punishable under the new law, but only the parents, spouses, and kids of alleged offenders are eligible to file a police report. The new code, according to Mr. Hiariej, has caused anxiety because many people do not understand the section on premarital sex and cohabitation.

He says only parents or related people can complain to the authorities about the law targeting premarital sex in the country.
