Former 1MDB general counsel Jasmine Loo testified in court that fugitive businessman Jho Low threatened her, forcing her to stay in Bangkok, Thailand, for five years. Low’s threats of making her life a living hell compelled her to delay her return to Malaysia until last year.

“Basically, Low swore to make my life a living hell and use his every resource and power that I would meet a terrible end if ever returned to Malaysia. I was not working and had to live on funds, whereby every eight or nine months Low would send a stranger to give her funds, amounting to US$2,500 (RM11,964.75) a year. It was deplorable to rely on someone who swore to make my life a living hell, but I had no choice but to survive,” Jasmine Loo says.

Loo, fearing for her safety, received funds from Low intermittently but lived in constant fear. She witnessed the plight of 1MDB whistleblower Xavier Andre Justo in Thailand, which further deterred her from returning to Malaysia. Loo’s testimony sheds light on the intimidation tactics used by those involved in the 1MDB scandal.
