The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) recorded RM903.49 million in seizures, including duties and taxes, from cigarette, tobacco, and cigar smuggling cases over the past two years. In 2024 alone, 2,621 cases were reported, with cigarettes accounting for RM93.18 million in seizures and RM399.52 million in duties.

As of July 2025, 1,517 cases were logged, totaling RM354.76 million. High demand for cheaper illicit cigarettes continues to drive smuggling, especially among low-income groups. JKDM has deployed 184 cargo and baggage scanners nationwide, 132 equipped with AI, to strengthen border enforcement and curb syndicates using false declarations and concealed shipments.
