KUALA LUMPUR, July 2, 2025 – Loansharks, known as “ah longs,” in Malaysia have new intimidation tactics by staging fake funerals for debtors, revealed Datuk Seri Michael Chong of the Malaysian Chinese Association. One victim, Mr. Tan, saw his portrait in a mock wake setting on social media, causing embarrassment and confusion. Tan borrowed RM10,000 for his business, repaying RM6,000. Another debtor, Mr. Chan, faces demands from a suspected rogue runner, Mr. Kai Qiang, despite paying RM1,000 on a RM700 loan. Chong condemned these psychological tactics at a Wisma MCA press conference on July 1.
