They won’t listen to Mahathir on Singapore water rates

Malaysia has decided against seeking a review of the raw water rate under its 1962 agreement with Singapore, citing Johor’s reliance on imported treated water amid industrial growth. Deputy Energy Transition Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir stated that any rate changes must consider the cost implications of treated water purchased from Singapore, which remains critical for Johor’s needs. Currently, Johor imports 16 million gallons of treated water daily, far exceeding the 5 mgd stipulated in the agreement, incurring RM180,000 annually. Despite efforts for self-sufficiency, Johor’s growing industries, such as data centers, necessitate caution in altering water arrangements. This is a niet to Mahathir.
