Malaysia Sees Growth in Women-Owned Businesses, Now 20.1% of Total

In 2022, Malaysia recorded 219,015 active women-owned establishments, comprising 20.1% of total businesses nationwide, according to the Economic Census 2023. This marked a 2.3% annual growth since 2015. Most women-led businesses were in the services sector (93.6%), notably in wholesale, retail (45%), and food and beverage (31.1%).

Selangor led with the highest number, followed by Sabah and Kelantan. These businesses generated RM136.9 billion in gross output, contributing 3.6% to the national economy. Women-owned SMEs made up 17% of all businesses, employing over 833,000 people. Officials say the trend underscores Malaysia’s progress toward gender inclusivity and women’s economic empowerment.
