Malaysia and Kazakhstan are exploring a direct rail link to boost trade connectivity and provide Malaysian exporters faster, cost-effective access to Eurasian markets. Kazakhstan’s ambassador to Malaysia, Bulat Sugurbayev, said the project could reduce reliance on maritime shipping, which faces delays from geopolitical tensions.

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy is in talks with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd on a potential logistics partnership, leveraging key hubs such as the Port of Khorgos. The initiative could build on the ASEAN Express route linking Selangor to Chongqing, enabling Malaysian businesses to reach Russia, the EU, and the Middle East more efficiently.
