Something to cheer. Last Saturday, Malaysian track athlete Shereen Vallabouy, 23, emerged as the queen of the indoor 400m in second-tier US college sports.

Her triumph at Pittsburg State University, Kansas, establishes a new championship mark and a Malaysian record of 53.79s, making her the first Malaysian female runner to go under 54 seconds in indoor 400m, beating Noraseela Mohd Khalid’s national record of 54.58s set in 2006.

Shereen is the youngest daughter of Samson Vallabouy and Josephine Mary, Malaysia’s celebrated middle-distance running duo.
