The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) clarified that its mobile phone data initiative is not for tracking individuals but uses anonymized, aggregated data for national development planning. Deputy Managing Director Zurkarnain Yasin said the project, recognized by the United Nations, aims to enhance official statistics’ quality and timeliness. Involving over 50 countries, it supports innovative data solutions for societal challenges. Zurkarnain dismissed spying allegations as baseless, emphasizing that no personal data is collected, and data is processed securely by telcos. The statistics department will brief stakeholders soon to address privacy concerns raised by MCA president Wee Ka Siong and others.
