KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 — One of the 55 Malaysians reported missing after the devastating Nepal-Tibet floods has safely returned home after 37 days, bringing relief to anxious families.
Malaysia Solidarity: Families in Hope (Masfih) confirmed that the individual, a Chinese Malaysian solo traveller, reported themselves to the Malaysian embassy in Kathmandu. “For Masfih and the other families, the finding of a safe Malaysian 37 days later is an extremely relieving and meaningful development,” spokesperson Manivannan Rethinam said.

The floods, triggered by a Himalayan glacier collapse and avalanche near Langtang Lirung, claimed over 1,400 lives, with more than 5,000 still missing in Nepal and hundreds unaccounted for in Tibet and China. The US Geological Survey said the collapse generated energy equivalent to a 5.2-magnitude earthquake.
Manivannan revealed the traveller was last seen at Nagthali Viewpoint on August 25, a day before the disaster. Stranded by destroyed roads and bridges, and without electricity or water, the individual eventually made their way back.
Search and rescue efforts have been hampered by poor transport and communication networks in affected regions. Families continue to await news of the remaining Malaysians still uncontactable.
