PAS Pushes for Deputy Religious Minister’s Resignation Amid NAM Allegations

Minister’s Resignation

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4, 2026 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim faces mounting pressure as PAS intensifies calls for the removal of Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Marhamah Rosli, over alleged links to the banned New Age Movement (NAM).

PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said JAKIM’s inquiry into Marhamah’s past content confirmed contradictions with Islamic tenets. He argued that even expressing positive views toward NAM teachings, which are prohibited by fatwa, disqualifies her from holding office. “It’s not just about teaching or inviting people to join, but the views themselves contradict the fatwa,” he said.

Marhamah has strongly denied the claims, insisting she adheres to mainstream Sunni Islam and challenging critics to prove otherwise in court. Yet, the controversy has widened, with coalition youth wings and pro-government voices urging her resignation. Political influencer Liyana Marzuki wrote on Facebook that Marhamah should step down before a cabinet reshuffle “decides her fate.”

Marhamah, a former preacher from Sabah, rose to prominence through the #JusticeForZara campaign before being appointed deputy minister in December 2025. The issue now poses a delicate test for Anwar’s administration, balancing coalition stability against religious oversight scrutiny.
