MITI Monitors Risk of Cheap Imports After U.S. Tariff Increase

The Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) is monitoring the potential influx of cheap goods into Malaysia following the U.S. decision to raise import tariffs. Minister Tengku Zafrul said producers may divert exports to Malaysia, risking price pressure and reduced competitiveness for local industries.

MITI Risk of Cheap Imports

Sectors like furniture, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors are expected to be most affected. MITI will act if dumping or unfair trade practices are detected, using legal tools such as anti-dumping and countervailing duties. The minister assured that Malaysia has safeguards in place and will respond swiftly to protect domestic producers from trade diversion impacts.
