Muslims who unknowingly bought and consumed chicken that was not slaughtered according to Islamic requirements do not bear any sin, provided they had no knowledge of the matter and did not deliberately overlook it.
Penang Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Sukki Othman said Islam does not hold individuals accountable for actions committed without their knowledge or intention. His clarification follows a raid on a chicken slaughtering and processing facility in Puchong, which allegedly failed to comply with syariah requirements. The facility was reportedly processing more than 40,000 chickens daily, with its products believed to have reached retailers and food businesses in several areas.
Consumers Need Not Perform Special Rituals After Unknowingly Eating Non-Halal Food
Mohd Sukki said customers who bought chicken from outlets that appeared to sell halal food need not replace the meals, pay kafarah or perform any specific act to purify themselves. He also stressed that their bodies do not become impure and their worship is not automatically rejected because of what they unknowingly consumed.
However, once reliable information confirms that a chicken supplier is not halal, Muslims must stop consuming its products. Anyone who knowingly eats such chicken without a valid religious excuse must repent. The mufti also urged consumers to prioritise suppliers with valid Malaysian Halal Certification and verify their status through official religious authorities rather than relying solely on shop logos or sellers’ assurances.
Penang Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Sukki Othman says Muslims who unknowingly consumed non-halal chicken are not sinful, but must stop once informed.
