In the 2023 state election, with support from DAP and PKR, UMNO only won two seats. Khir argued BN’s losses in Selangor were part of a nationwide trend, noting the party’s decline continued under later leadership. His remarks follow criticism from UMNO leaders after his move to join Bersatu, with some reviving the broom controversy as a symbol of BN’s fall.
