Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has not paid the Najib RM50m fine that his conditional house arrest depends on, Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said on Sunday (Nov 1), according to Bernama.

Speaking to reporters in Kota Bharu after launching the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) MADANI Adopted School Programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Hor, Mohd Dusuki said the latest information received by the AGC showed the payment had not been made.

He said Najib “has yet to fulfil the requirement as of now”.

No deadline for Najib RM50m fine

The AG said no specific deadline had been set for the payment. Asked whether Najib must remain in prison while the fine is outstanding, he confirmed that was the case.

Media reported on Sept 18 that the King, Sultan Ibrahim, had granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, on condition that the RM50 million fine is paid.

The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said the decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara.

How the sentence was reduced

In July 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court sentenced Najib to 12 years in jail and fined him RM210 million for misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds. The Court of Appeal upheld the decision in December 2021 and the Federal Court did the same in August 2022.

At its 61st meeting on Jan 29, 2024, the Pardons Board halved the jail term to six years and cut the fine to RM50 million.

Separately, the High Court on Dec 26, 2025 sentenced Najib to 15 years in jail and fined him RM11.4 billion over four abuse-of-power charges and 21 money-laundering charges involving RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds. He filed an appeal on Dec 29, 2025.

DAP wants pardon minutes released

Also on Sunday, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said the party had told Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim it wants the minutes of the Federal Territories Pardons Board meeting on Najib’s conditional pardon made public, Free Malaysia Today reported.

Loke said the release would depend on the attorney-general. He added that someone involved in a major corruption scandal should not be released or granted house arrest.

FMT also reported that Umno has launched a crowdfunding drive to help Najib settle the fine.
