A tweet that went viral showed an American tourist paying for groceries in China using QR pay. There are others that mentioned China is allegedly using social credit systems and are forcing it on tourists. However, this is not the case.
Americans oblivious with QR Pay
Even in Malaysia, e-wallets that focus primarily on QR Pay are considered the norm. It is convenient for retailers and customers alike as physical cash seems pretty dated even in Southeast Asia.
Other Malaysians stated that people from the United States don’t even have proper interbank transfers. They would need to use apps like Cashapp or paypal. Can any Malaysian phantom survive without a simple online bank transaction?
