Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared on Sunday that “AGI has arrived,” crediting OpenAI’s newest model, Astra, which was trained on Nvidia’s chips.

In a post on X, Huang congratulated OpenAI, noting the rapid progress from ChatGPT to Astra in just four years. OpenAI unveiled Astra last week, calling it the world’s “most intelligent and aligned model,” capable of performing demanding professional work with speed and accuracy. Company president Greg Brockman welcomed the “AGI era,” suggesting Astra may mark the milestone.

AGI, or artificial general intelligence, refers to highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable tasks.

While Huang and other tech leaders, including Elon Musk and Marc Andreessen, have claimed AGI has been reached, critics remain skeptical.

Researcher Gary Marcus argued Huang offered no evidence or definition, calling it “declaring victory without a definition.” ARC Prize researchers also cautioned Astra’s benchmark success does not prove AGI, as tests occur in limited environments.

OpenAI continues to rely heavily on Nvidia GPUs, which power its training and inference systems. Nvidia’s booming chip sales have fueled record revenues, with Huang hinting at even greater computing capacity ahead, noting “400K GPUs coming online next.”
