New: Outrage Over Play Mocking Rukun Negara Sparks Calls for Apology

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19, 2026, A viral theatre production allegedly mocking the Rukun Negara, national institutions, and the Malay Rulers has triggered widespread condemnation, with demands for a public apology and firm enforcement action.

A circulating video showed actors exchanging racial taunts, mockingly reciting the Rukun Negara line-by-line, and featuring one actor clad only in red underwear painted with words. The incident has prompted calls for accountability from civil society and government leaders.

Mocking Rukun Negara

Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) president Ahmad Fahmi Samsudin said the performance represented a “total failure of moral judgment.” He urged organizers and actors to issue a public apology and explanation. “There is a difference between criticising our failure to embody the Rukun Negara and making the Rukun Negara itself an object of insult,” he said.

National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang urged police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate under the Penal Code, Sedition Act, and Communications and Multimedia Act. Religious Affairs Minister Zulkifli Hasan also condemned the skit, calling for uncompromised legal action against those exploiting moral values for popularity.
