John, a 31-year-old from Penang, thought he’d found love through a mobile game. A woman he met online invited him to Ipoh, and on February 7, he boarded a bus, keeping it secret from his family. At Ipoh, she waited in a car with a man. Trusting her, John got in—only for a hood to cover his head, darkness swallowing him. He awoke in a scam centre in Laos’ Golden Triangle, trained in deception for two weeks until it abruptly shut down. Stranded, he called home. With no ID, it took six weeks to return to Malaysia on March 18.
