Pittsburgh Airport Chief: ‘We’re Like a Small City’

Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, went from consulting to leading Pittsburgh International Airport. She says airports operate like small cities, with teams managing everything from baggage systems and runway snow crews to cybersecurity and wildlife control.

Half her role is reactive, half proactive, as she balances daily incidents with long‑term strategy. Cassotis stresses that airports are separate from airlines, often misunderstood by passengers. Her mission is to prove that public utilities can be run like businesses, while keeping staff engaged and operations seamless. “Airports are fun places to work,” she says, “and not easily replaced by AI.”
