KUALA LUMPUR – Lawmakers from both government and opposition parties have criticised the civil service committee investigating MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki, calling it inadequate and lacking independence.
Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim (PKR), Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh (DAP), and Alor Setar MP Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden (PAS) argued that the committee, led by Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar, has too narrow a scope. It will only probe Azam’s shareholding scandal, not wider allegations of collusion between MACC and private individuals to strong-arm business rivals.

Hassan warned of a conflict of interest, noting that the Attorney-General cannot both investigate and later prosecute. Ramkarpal echoed this, stressing that an independent body should lead the probe. The committee, which also includes senior officials from the Public Service Department and Treasury, will report its findings to the cabinet. MPs insist collusion allegations must also be investigated.
