KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14, 2026: Parti Bersama leader Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has been urged to provide a detailed explanation for proposing the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the party’s Kancil 2027 Shadow Budget.
Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) strategy director Mohd Shafiq Iqram Abdullah noted that Rafizi had previously opposed GST, arguing in 2014 that the tax should not be implemented until workers’ and household incomes had improved.
“Policy changes are not necessarily wrong. Economic conditions can change and someone may reassess their position based on new evidence. However, such changes must be accompanied by a reasonable explanation,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Shafiq questioned what economic conditions had changed, what safeguards would be introduced and how the impact of a proposed five per cent GST on consumers’ purchasing power would be managed.
He said Parti Bersama should openly explain its assumptions, financing sources and implementation mechanisms, particularly given the impact consumption taxes can have on household spending.
According to him, political debate should focus on policy evaluation rather than partisan differences. He added that any budget proposal must be judged on its ability to manage public finances responsibly, protect purchasing power and ensure assistance reaches those who need it most.
