Malaysia could save RM300 million annually by reducing onion imports if local cultivation projects succeed, said Agriculture Minister Mohamad Sabu. The Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation’s (PKPS) rose onion project shows promising yields of four tonnes per acre. Plans are underway to distribute seeds to interested farmers by early next year to meet savings targets. In 2021, Malaysia imported 484,867 metric tonnes of onions worth RM902.5 million, mainly from India, China, and Pakistan. By producing 30% of its onion supply locally, Malaysia aims to cut import costs significantly. Penang, Kelantan, and other states are also exploring large-scale onion cultivation opportunities.
