The topic of child sexual offences has been in discussion among Malaysians. However, it is rather peculiar that we do not have a law specifically against this issue. Child abuse of a number of form seems to be a common place in this country, unfortunately. Malaysia now has a bill to protect children from sexual offences.
Netizens are asking the million Ringgit question, were the children not protected before? Others are making bold accusations towards the opposition leaders claiming that they are partially responsible for social issues like this. However, netizens are praising the Minister in fighting for the rights of children.
Protecting children
After being presented for its second and third reading by Law and Institutional Reform Minister Azalina Othman Said, the bill was approved through a voice vote. Ten Members of Parliament participated in the bill’s discussion. Azalina emphasised the need to amend the Act in order to align with technological advancements and provide better safeguards against all types of online sexual exploitation and abuse of children.
