RIAU – Authorities in Riau have launched an investigation after a Sumatran elephant was found decapitated inside a forest concession belonging to PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (PT RAPP) in Pelalawan regency. The carcass, estimated to be that of a 30-year-old elephant, was discovered on February 2 by a company worker who noticed a strong odour in the forest. The animal was found in a sitting position with its head missing.

Company security immediately alerted police and the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). Riau Police Criminal Investigation Division head I Gede Yoga Eka Pranata said investigators are conducting a crime scene inspection, questioning witnesses, and performing a necropsy to determine the cause of death. Soil samples from the site have also been collected for laboratory analysis.

The case has raised concerns about wildlife protection in Riau, where endangered elephants face ongoing threats from habitat loss and poaching.
