RM500k Grants Proposed to Replace Ministry-Run Solar Lamp Projects

Julau MP Larry Sng Wei Shen questioned the federal government’s RM10,000 per solar streetlamp cost, saying it was five times higher than the market price of under RM2,000.

Speaking during the 13th Malaysia Plan debate, he urged that rural Sabah and Sarawak projects be handled by local communities through grants of up to RM500,000, reducing costs and improving efficiency. 

Sng cited faster, cheaper community-led road projects as proof. He also called for rural funding to be increased to RM1 million and proposed a gradual subsidy reduction by 2030 to prevent market manipulation while ensuring communities can adapt smoothly.
