Rubio, also President Trump’s national security advisor, aims to reaffirm U.S. commitment to a free and secure Indo-Pacific, countering China’s regional assertiveness. His visit coincides with announced tariffs—25% on Malaysia and Japan, and 40% on Laos—set to begin August 1. 

Vietnam has tentatively avoided the tariffs. Rubio will meet ASEAN and East Asian foreign ministers, while simultaneously navigating tense trade concerns and growing Chinese influence, especially in critical minerals vital to modern technologies.
