Seven Deviant Muslim Sects Now Under Police Radar, 23 Arrests Made Since 2022

Federal police in Malaysia are closely monitoring and taking action against deviant Islamic sects that are seen as a serious threat to public safety and security. Since 2022, 23 arrests involving followers and leaders of such sects have been made, and 51 police reports were lodged against them in 2022 and 2023.

The police are collaborating with government agencies and state Islamic departments to prevent the spread of these teachings. Seven deviant sects are being monitored, and any followers acting against public interest will face stern action under the law. Malaysia officially recognizes only the Shafi’i school of jurisprudence from the Sunni branch of Islam.
