Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli announced plans to use the MyKad as a mechanism for targeted RON 95 petrol subsidies. Under this system, eligible Malaysians would scan their MyKad at fuel pumps to access subsidized petrol, with eligibility determined via data stored in a cloud database. Rafizi outlined two options to reform subsidies: either allow petrol prices to reflect market rates and provide monthly cash aid to targeted groups, or implement targeted subsidies where only ineligible individuals pay market prices. The show of ID approach aims to control inflation while ensuring that subsidies reach those who need them.
