Kuala Lumpur: Singaporean businessman Mohamed Kazali Salleh, 50, funded Malaysian ISIS militant Akel Zainal on three occasions from Dec 2013 to early 2014.

The total amount he gave the Malaysian is S$1,000 and handed money once personally to the IS militant.

The other two times he used Western Union in Singapore and Malaysia to transmit the funds to Syria.

The militant, whose real name is Mohd Aquil Wan Zainal Abidin was believed to be the most senior Malaysian ISIS fighter in Syria. According to news reports, he was killed in a Russian raid in March 2029.

Akel Zainal was a drummer in the 1990’s rock group, Ukays.

In Singapore, the Ministry of Home Affairs says Kazali, who had been running his business in Malaysia, was a “close associate” of Akel Zainal.

Kazali was arrested by Malaysia’s special branch in Dec 2018, deported to Singapore on Jan 7, 2019, and detained under the Internal Security Act.
