The High Court in Shah Alam on Thursday (Nov 5) sentenced a Singaporean man to 30 years in prison and 12 strokes of the rotan for methamphetamine trafficking, FMT reported.
Justice Roszianayati Ahmad found that Lim Yee Seng had failed to raise a reasonable doubt on the charge of trafficking 767.6g of methamphetamine under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Trafficking Meth at Sepang hotel
Lim committed the offence four years ago at Hotel 99 in Jalan Warisan Sentral 1, Sepang, according to the report.
His co-accused, local contractor Mu Sau Yong, was acquitted of the same charge by the same court earlier this year.
Defence claim rejected
In his defence, Lim claimed that a man known as Cheng Meng Kok had driven the car in which the drugs were found.
The judge noted that this claim was not raised during the prosecution’s case. “I find the accused’s explanation to be an afterthought,” she said.
Death penalty not imposed
The court decided against imposing the death penalty. In explaining the sentence, the judge said Lim had the potential to rejoin his family and return to society.
The 30-year prison term will run from the date of Lim’s arrest on Jan 27, 2022, the report said.
