SIS Forum Challenges Fatwa Labeling It ‘Deviant’ in Federal Court

The Federal Court will deliver its decision on June 19 regarding an appeal by SIS (Sisters in Islam) Forum (Malaysia) and its founder, Zainah Anwar, challenging a 2014 fatwa issued by the Selangor religious authorities declaring the group deviant.

The fatwa also targets supporters of liberalism and pluralism, calling for censorship and bans on related publications. The appeal follows earlier rejections by the High Court and Court of Appeal, which ruled the fatwa was not subject to judicial review. 

Respondents include the Selangor Fatwa Committee, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), and the state government. The case raises significant questions about religious authority and civil liberties.
