Malaysia to Mandate Social Media Platforms Register with MCMC Now, Enforce Code of Conduct

1 min read

Social media platform providers in Malaysia must register with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for licensing if they have over eight million local users. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that these companies have a month to respond to the newly introduced code of conduct, which will become mandatory by year-end. He emphasized that non-compliance will lead to serious consequences, including fines. Fahmi also called on platforms to respect Malaysia’s position on pro-Palestine content, highlighting the government’s disapproval of biased censorship practices. He warned platforms not to assume they are above the laws of a sovereign nation.
