KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 1 — A Perak family of Indian descent has ended generations of statelessness after courts declared them Malaysian citizens, bringing relief and new hope for their future.
Kamaladevi Kanniappan, 47, along with her two adult children and three grandchildren, were born in Malaysia but lacked citizenship documentation, preventing legal marriage, access to affordable healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.
The breakthrough came through landmark rulings: the High Court in May 2024 and the Court of Appeal in November 2025 declared the entire family Malaysian citizens. The government chose not to appeal, finalising their status.

“Now my grandchildren can dream of finishing school and becoming anything they choose,” Kamaladevi said, expressing profound relief. She described years of heartbreak, expensive private healthcare, and feeling excluded despite being born here.
“For the first time, we belong. I can sleep without fear for my family’s future,” she added. The family’s long fight highlights ongoing issues faced by stateless individuals in Malaysia.
