Stop the return of the fake news law

Civil society groups and experts have strongly criticized Malaysia’s proposed amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA), describing them as excessively punitive and potentially enabling censorship. Critics argue that the changes, tabled by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil on Dec 2, empower the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) with sweeping, unchecked authority, including the ability to search and seize information from service providers under Section 73A without safeguards like protecting journalistic sources. While the government claims the amendments aim to combat online harms such as cyberbullying and scams, experts like Dr. Benjamin Loh have labeled them “horrific” and a potential “backdoor” for a fake news law.
