Police have arrested nine people over an alleged Sungai Besi cafe riot in Desa Tun Razak, which investigators believe was sparked by a dispute over business territory, Malay Mail reported, citing Kosmo.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus was reported as saying the incident took place at about 11pm on Sunday (Nov 1).

Sungai Besi cafe riot over turf

Fadil said officers from the Sungai Besi police station’s Motorcycle Patrol Unit, the Cheras district Criminal Investigation Department and other Cheras district personnel were sent to the scene after police received information about the disturbance.

In a statement on Monday (Nov 2), he said preliminary investigations showed the fight arose from a disagreement over business territory in the area.

Pictures and videos of the incident had earlier circulated on social media, showing a group gathered outside the premises, with police officers and patrol motorcycles also at the location.

Most suspects had prior records

Police arrested eight men and one woman, aged between 16 and 44, near the scene. Two of them have been identified as the main suspects.

According to police, checks showed most of those detained had previous records for criminal and drug-related offences. Several items believed to have been used in the incident were seized, and all nine suspects have been detained to assist investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting while armed, which carries a maximum jail term of five years, a fine or both upon conviction, Malay Mail reported.

Fadil urged the public not to speculate or share unverified information that could interfere with investigations.

Those with information can call the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999, the Cheras district police headquarters at 03-9205 0445 or 03-9205 0465, or visit the nearest police station.
