Putrajaya’s proposed constitutional amendment to limit prime ministers to 10 years in office could technically allow Najib Abdul Razak a brief return to power. Najib, who served nearly nine years excluding caretaker periods, would still have one year and 29 days available if pardoned and re-elected.
Najib brief return
Currently serving prison sentences for SRC International and 1MDB cases, Najib remains barred from contesting elections until five years after completing his sentence. However, Umno is campaigning for a full pardon. Other former premiers, including Muhyiddin Yassin and Ismail Sabri Yaakob, would also remain eligible under the proposed retroactive limits.
