BANGKOK/PHNOM PENH – Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have erupted into violence, with Thai fighter jets launching airstrikes on Cambodian military targets following a series of diplomatic and border escalations. The Thai army confirmed using “air power against military targets as planned” after clashes intensified along the border.
The crisis began after Cambodia expelled Thailand’s ambassador in response to Thailand closing northeastern border crossings and expelling Cambodia’s envoy, following a landmine blast that injured five Thai soldiers. Today’s fighting has left at least one Thai civilian dead and three others, including a child, seriously injured.
Cambodia condemned Thailand’s “reckless and brutal military aggression”, accusing it of bombing a road near the ancient Preah Vihear temple. Clashes continue in at least six areas along the border, with Thailand now closing all border points with Cambodia as tensions spiral rapidly.
