Kuala Lumpur: Tokyo is under its fourth coronavirus state of emergency and the Olympics is not helping. The country is seeing a record of virus cases since the games began.

Tokyo reported 2,848 new COVID-19 cases, almost 300 more daily cases compared to Jan. 7 and this brings its total to more than 200,000 since the pandemic began last year. Tokyo had 3,177 new positive cases on Tuesday.

However, for the first time in four days, no Olympic athletes tested positive for the coronavirus in the preceding day.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga urged people to stay home and watch the Olympics on TV but viewership has dropped after the opening ceremony.
