With the US midterm elections two weeks away, President Donald Trump told a rally in Kansas on Monday night that the riots and looting in France offer a preview of what could happen in the United States if Democrats win in November, CNN reported.
Kansas has become an unexpected battleground this cycle, with Democrats hoping to win a Senate seat there for the first time since 1932. Trump framed the midterms as a choice between Republicans and “extremists”, according to Fox News. The day before, he had posted on Truth Social blaming immigration for the unrest in France. At a rally in Kentucky on Saturday, he urged voters to treat the election as a referendum on his second-term agenda and told supporters that Republican wins would put $5,000 in each person’s pocket, according to Louisville Public Media.
How Democrats are responding
Democrats are making Trump himself a central issue. Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff mocked the president’s recent rally and criticised his handling of the economy and the Iran conflict, Fox News reported, and Trump has hit back by targeting Ossoff and other Democratic candidates personally.
In Virginia, a group of Democrats campaigning together on Monday said the war in Iran matters beyond gas prices. Former Rep. Elaine Luria accused the administration of misreporting the number of casualties, according to The Washington Post. The administration’s response was not included in the reporting available at the time of writing.
Ahead of Trump’s planned rally at Clemson University on Wednesday, South Carolina Democratic Party chair Christale Spain said Republicans could bring the president to the state but could not bring down the cost of living. She added that Democrats are contesting all 124 State House districts for the first time in more than 50 years, and that Trump will not be on the ballot on November 3.
Separately, Rep. Robert Garcia said that if Democrats win the House and he becomes chair of the Oversight Committee, he would open a wide-ranging investigation into the administration’s immigration enforcement policies.
