Uniqlo Hijab Sparks Muslim Backlash in Malaysia

Uniqlo Hijab Sparks Muslim Backlash in Malaysia

Japanese clothing giant Uniqlo has sparked outrage among segments of Malaysia’s Muslim community with its upcoming “Uniqlo Hijab” collection, slated for launch on August 17.

Critics argue the line fails the modesty test, as the headgear covers only the hair while leaving the neck and chest partially exposed. Many insist the label should be called “Uniqlo Turban” instead, accusing the brand of misleading consumers.

Male Critics Call Uniqlo Hijab “Haram” and Misleading

The backlash has spread widely on Threads, with some even urging JAKIM to investigate. Ironically, the campaign stylist is renowned Muslim hijab stylist Farah Dinana, though supporters note styling decisions are made collectively and she should not be singled out.

Male critics have been especially vocal, branding the collection “haram” and “not Sharia‑compliant.”

One post declaring “This is not a hijab, this is a piece of cloth” garnered over 11,000 likes. Others accused Uniqlo of attempting to “liberalise Muslims” or failing to understand Malaysian cultural standards.

Still, some voices defended the collection, arguing hijab journeys differ and the product could be a first step for women beginning to cover.

The controversy underscores the tension between global fashion branding and local religious sensitivities in Malaysia’s modest wear market.
