The United States has laid out four conditions before it agrees to lower tariffs imposed on Malaysia, said Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz. These demands include reducing the US trade deficit with Malaysia.

They also include removing non-tariff barriers, ensuring protection of US technology, and encouraging Malaysian investments in approved US sectors. Washington highlighted concerns like Malaysia’s lengthy halal certification process and the re-exporting of sensitive technologies like semiconductors.
Tengku Zafrul clarified that Malaysia’s goal is not just tariff reduction but full removal. The minister also warned that Malaysia’s strong March trade figures may not be sustainable moving forward.
