The Gig Workers Bill 2025, passed by the Dewan Rakyat, will legally recognise verbal contracts, offering protection to gig workers. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said the measure is crucial for industries like entertainment, where agreements are often verbal or implied. “While written contracts are best practice, the bill defines a service agreement as any arrangement, whether written, verbal, express or implied,” he said. This recognition ensures workers can pursue disputes at tribunals even without documentation. Employers must also provide payslips upon request, formally acknowledging gig workers’ rights. The bill is scheduled for tabling in the Dewan Negara tomorrow.
