A far-left activist group, Vulkangruppe, has claimed responsibility for a suspected arson attack on power cables near a gas-fired plant in south-west Berlin early Saturday. The incident caused a major blackout affecting around 45,000 households, 2,200 businesses, hospitals, and care facilities during near-freezing temperatures. Incendiary devices were used, officials confirmed.

Berlin’s mayor condemned the “left-wing extremists” for endangering lives. Emergency generators were deployed, some patients relocated, and partial power restored by Sunday, but full reconnection is expected only by Thursday. Schools remain closed. The group apologised to poorer residents but justified the act as targeting the fossil fuel economy.
