Zakir Naik: Citizen or Fugitive? Minister Debunks Rumors of Citizenship

Dr. Zakir Naik, a controversial preacher from Mumbai, has been a permanent resident of Malaysia since 2017, fleeing India in 2016 over allegations of money laundering and inciting extremism. Recently, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail debunked rumors of Zakir gaining Malaysian citizenship, calling a viral post “fake” and tracing it to a 2017 award ceremony. Zakir, once banned from speaking in Malaysia after divisive remarks in 2019, reportedly has no desire for citizenship, awaiting resolution to return to India. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said Malaysia won’t extradite him unless he stirs trouble, leaving his status a lingering debate.
